Mapua, A Legacy Forever

Mapua, A Legacy Forever
By Jason Fojas a.k.a DJ Majik

We all stepped on this campus with just a vague idea of what Mapua Institute of Technology is. Ideas of a great school that produces some of the most professional and talented individuals that have helped mold this country as well as technical fields abroad. Yet at the time, we did not know how we would be able to attain such feats.

Our parents gave us the financial means and with a head full of ideals we ventured out to become Mapuans. We undertook the academic struggles of a challenging school. Its culture and wonderful staff have seeped into our veins, making us the life's blood of a living legacy. Known for our tenacity and humor even under the most trying times, Mapuans survive.

Guided by a lifestyle which is truly Mapuan, we overcome the troubles of academics, seeking a new foundation on which we can launch our careers when we leave its doors.

We will leave these doors as professional men and women and join our brothers and sisters as alumni of this great Institute. But will we have an Alma Mater to come back to? Does its legacy end with batch 2005?

A new aura has claimed the school. Candles have been lit and just as mourners we file into school, swiping our identification cards almost as if we are signing the guest book of a wake. We do not want to lose the Mapua we have all come to love.

Yet we do not give up our struggle. There must be a Mapua for the future generation to enjoy. We must not let its legacy die, to fade away only to be remembered as pictures in a book or print on paper. Mapua is our Mother. She has nutured us, taught us, and guided us
into creating better lives for ourselves as well as the lives of our family. Mapua takes care of its own and our struggle will not stop until we have secured a legacy which future generations can become apart of.

Education is not a business. Its sole purpose is to mold individuals into professionals, to create individuals that can guide our country. Rallies and heated debates have occurred. Heated emotions fueled by a pure love of Mapua have been displayed and the voices of the students, teachers, parents and alumni have been heard. Yet why do the people in charge act as if they are blind or deaf? Why do they still insist on changing the name of our beloved school? Until this day this question has been avoided or answered vaguely by the owners of the school. Please treat us as professionals and address the issues that we have presented to you.

We have been deceived. The practices seen do not merit that of a professional. As customers we deserve ethical treatment and without it we have the obligation to voice out and demand the goods and services we have paid for. Just like in any business, the customerhas the right to refuse "damaged goods" or services that are not up to par with what has been advertised. Should we allow for all of these rallies to continue? Should it come to the point that the students file suit against the owners of the school seeking damages for the events that have taken place? We also have investments in this Institute. We hold something more important than money. Each student, professor and alumni is a bank of knowledge which we credit to Mapua.

So I ask those in charge to treat us with respect and listen to our complaints. All we want is that the legacy of Mapua Institute of Technology continues not just for the next 5 years, but forever. We want our children to have a home in Mapua. We want our alumni to be able to come back to the school that has molded their lives, paying homage to its alma mater, setting the example for future Mapuans to follow. Let us not rest until we have attained this.
